This year, the Media Arts program makes its debut in several unusual locations in Richmond, including the rotunda inside the Richmond Cultural Centre building, a pair of shipping containers in the woods at the corner of the Granville Street and Minoru Gate, two multimedia live shows in the Cinema Café, and curated artworks on the Canada Line commuter digital network.
From contemporary images to archival photos, digital interactive stories to traditional Chinese tea ceremoney, this program is a kaleidoscopic view of the city’s evolving arts culture.
The featured artist of the program this year is Paul Wong. Described as a Chinese-Canadian Warhol, Wong’s work is often a fusion of forms, subjects and styles. A master of large-scale installations, Wong has an eye for social context and is constantly driven by a search of identity and the society-at-large. Prepare to be awed by his three-channel video installation transforming the interior of Richmond Cultural Centre!
In addition, three Canadian visual artists will exhibit their works inside the shipping containers; Japanese artist Sachiyo will be leading the audience into her Microscopic Live Cinema-Theatre, full of magic; an originally conceived multimedia performance combining tea ceremony and visual projections will bring you to taste tea as never before.
